THE BLURB . . .
PEOPLE ARE CAPABLE OF ALMOST ANYTHING.
You never know what’s happening on the other side of the wall.
Your neighbour told you that she didn’t want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn’t stand her crying.
Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You’ll have the baby monitor and you’ll take it in turns to go back every half hour.
Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She’s gone.
You’ve never had to call the police before. But now they’re in your home, and who knows what they’ll find there.
What would you be capable of, when pushed past your limit?
MY REVIEW . . .
I really enjoyed the author’s spare style of writing; just the right amount of description and no waffling. The book had a really strong premise and I was invested from the start to find out what happened to baby Cora.
This great story constantly challenges the reader to think ‘what would I do’ and you could really understand the characters’ dilemmas, particularly that of Anne, baby Cora’s mother. There were some memorable characters in the book, the cop being one of them. And there were some characters who you were just willing to come a cropper!
The relationships in the book were complicated and well developed, all adding to the compulsive read.
Towards the end, the reader is required to suspend disbelief and to embrace the plot developments but I was happy to do so because I’d really enjoyed the ride. The author had a lot of loose ends to tie up and she did so admirably and inventively.
The story is fast-paced and a real page turner.
THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR: Highly recommended for thriller fans!
